Mobile GIS helps utilities meet demands of Traffic Management Act

03 August 2007

Enhancements to Innogistic’s OpenWINGS Mobile GIS System are helping utility companies prepare for the latest Traffic Management Act regulations which are coming into force in late 2007 / early 2008. The Act which was passed in 2004, aims to tackle congestion and reduce disruption on the road network by giving local authorities increased powers in a number of areas – one of which includes greater control over the co-ordination of utility works.

Mobile GIS solutions provided by Innogistic are already used by Utility companies to raise work orders in the field, passing relevant information from the GIS through to works management and scheduling systems.

Kevin North, Innogistic’s Utilities Business Manager explains how Mobile GIS fits in to the TMA:

“The latest TMA regulations require much more information to be supplied to through to local authorities in the form of Highways Notices. The new enhancements automate this by extracting information from the GIS and combining it with other information captured from a wizard based interface. The result is a comprehensive set of data ready for automatic submission to the local authority”.

Key elements of the system include updating and maintaining the Street Gazetteer Database, improving the work promotion process, and automatically creating Highways Notices for use in streetworks noticing systems.
